Medical Lake, Washington

Medical Lake, WA

Medical Lake, Washington, built its early reputation around something people once believed was literally medicinal. Native peoples had long used the lake and surrounding area before settlers arrived, and by the late 1800s newcomers were promoting the mineral-rich water and mud as treatments for a variety of ailments. Hotels, bathhouses, and other facilities appeared near the shoreline as visitors traveled to the community hoping to benefit from the lake. By 1905, an electric interurban line connected the area with Spokane, Washington, making it much easier for people to spend a day or weekend there. Medical Lake became a popular regional destination for bathing, boating, picnics, and other lakeside recreation. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated the city’s population at 5,003 in 2024, up from 4,874 counted in the 2020 Census.

The community had already incorporated in 1890, with Lord Stanley Hallett serving as its first mayor. Hallett later built one of the most distinctive houses in town. Completed in 1900, Hallett House was designed with rounded towers and other castle-like features that made it stand out from the homes around it. The interior included a ballroom, library, and stained-glass windows. The building survived long after the health-resort era faded and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

Medical Lake also became home to an institution that has been part of the community for more than a century. Eastern State Hospital opened in 1891 after the state selected the area for a psychiatric hospital serving eastern Washington. The facility remains in operation today and provides inpatient psychiatric care for adults from counties across the eastern side of the state.

Waterfront Park keeps Medical Lake connected to the water that gave the city its name. The park stretches along the southern shore and includes a swimming beach, playground, boat launch, picnic areas, and athletic fields. It also connects with the Medical Lake Trail, a roughly three-mile multi-use loop that circles the lake and links several city parks with downtown and nearby neighborhoods. Motorized boats are prohibited on the lake, which keeps much of the shoreline focused on quieter recreation such as fishing, walking, and swimming.

The lake also provides the setting for Founders Day, one of the city’s largest annual events. The celebration is held in June and brings activities to both downtown and Waterfront Park. Recent events have included a parade, live music, vendors, athletic competitions, and fireworks over the water. The combination of the downtown parade and lakefront activities makes the celebration closely tied to the layout of the city rather than being confined to a single venue.

Lefevre Street gives downtown Medical Lake much of its day-to-day activity. Lefevre Street Bakery & Cafe serves breakfast and lunch along with a bakery case filled with pastries. Danishes, croissants, cinnamon rolls, scones, and apple fritters are among the offerings, while the coffee menu includes specialty drinks such as the Pale Rider and Velvet Elvis.

Roam Coffee House is another local stop along Lefevre Street. The company operates its own roastery in addition to the coffee shop, giving it control over the coffee from roasting through the finished drink. The Medical Lake location serves espresso drinks, brewed coffee, and other beverages in a storefront close to the rest of downtown.

Johnson Homestead brings a different kind of local history into the business district. The Johnson family’s farming roots go back to 1932, when Fred and Naomi Johnson settled on land that remained connected to the family. The business now sells locally raised beef and pork through its shop in Medical Lake, carrying a farming operation that began generations ago into a modern retail setting.

That mix of restaurants, shops, older properties, and residential neighborhoods also means pest problems can turn up in very different settings.
